In a truly unexpected event, Frostgrave has won ‘Best Rules 2019’ in the Wargames Illustrated awards! This is especially gratifying as the
winner is decided by public vote.
Really, it’s pretty astounding that a game that has been
out for 4.5 years, and that has a second edition on the horizon, would win such
an award. Back then, I never imagined that people would still be playing the
game many years later, much less hold it in such high regard.
I think it is a real testament to the community that has
grown up around the game. It’s just so full of people who take a fun-first
approach to the hobby.

I don’t believe the full list of winners has been
released yet, but I’ll be interested to see who is there!

ReplyDeleteCongratulations. The award is well-deserved. The Frostgrave setting is a novel take on the regular fantasy battle/ dungeon crawl. The powerful Wizards, supported by their disposable followers, gives an interesting dynamic not found in most settings (outside of Ars Magica). The fact that everyone is vulnerable is an added bit of special sauce.

DeleteFrostgrave and Rangers of Shadowdeep are the only Skirmish games I have been able to get non-wargamers to play. Between the theme and the easy to teach rules and spells, it truly is approachable by everyone.
ReplyDeleteit also helps that games can be played in about 1hr and I have been able to put most of the rules in a quick reference double sided sheet.
I would like to note that Star Wars Legion has recently moved to a lighter easier to play set of skirmish rules to attract new players.
While the world has room for complicated 6hr long mass battle games, I believe there are still many who rather have a game that is easy to learn and plays relatively quickly without a 50 figure army.
Congratulations. Especially noteworthy, as Warlord has had some major releases this year, including the Black Power 2.0 rulebook.

ReplyDeleteWord of mouth matters, and several popular you-tube crafting channels (like Black Magic Craft) have taken up the game. So even though it's a few years old, I suspect the popularity is actually growing.
