Osprey Games and North Star have released the first photograph of some of the plastic Stargrave figures that should be available in April along with the book!
I believe these guys were built from the 'Crew' box, which is just one of three boxes that are planned for the launch! The Mercenaries and Troopers boxes are also in the works.
As you can see, each box is going to have plenty of different options for both human and non-human figures, not to mention loads of different weapons and gear.
All of the figures have been sculpted by Bobby Jackson and the paint jobs here are by Kev Dallimore.
And what is that I notice about their feet?

ReplyDeleteIs it just me or are they rather reminiscent of some of Mark Copplestone’s work? Which is not a bad thing.
The cyclops head, and likely others, should be quite useful for fantasy gaming as well.
I look forward to seeing what cross-kitting shenanigans happens with some of the Frostgrave figures and particularly the non-human and Ghost Archipelago sets; I like the idea of a tribal in that pilots helmet, quite possibly wielding a blaster as a club.
As to bases these might be pre-production samples rather than from the actual mounds so while I hope they don't have integral bases they might yet prove to have so.
They don't have integral bases. You're looking at finished figures there, not test pieces.

What do you mean when you use those words? It's clear at a glance that these miniatures aren't true to scale - their proportions are nowhere near an actual Human's. Which is how I personally like it, and what I'd use the term heroic scale for. I'm guessing your definitions are different?

DeleteI take Heroic scale as meaning 32mm not 28mm. Nothing to do with proportions.
DeleteFair point that they're clearly somewhat stylised, rather than truly proportioned. But I did put these terms in scare quotes. My main point was wanting to see how they compare to other supposedly-28mm lines.
Delete32 mm can be a true scale. But if you've seen proportions of historicals vs proportions of Frostgrave, you see heads and hands are bigger than you'd expect, and the whole is a bit broader. There are degrees to this (and Northstar is not the most exaggerated), but the trend is definately there.

Now Heroic is often in 28-32 mm (scales vary wildly, from 26mm eye height to 34 for humans in GW alone throughout the years that I have).
They are exactly the same size as GW Forgeworld and LOTR infantry. So closer to normal 28mm, but not realistic 28mm. Same as Bolt action, really.

Removing the integral bases is a good move for Sci-Fi, all the grating and panels going on bases etc. Re: scale, I hate the term, it's more like 'style' - I'm guessing these are the same style and size as all the other frostgrave and ghost archipelago plastics. Perfect for conversions and mixing kits.

ReplyDeleteIs there also a "2" in the works? I love the Wizards and Soldiers 2 boxes, (my nieces have loads of fun painting their princesses from them, and they get raided often when making d&d characters), and sci-fi can also use the "believable female figures" aesthetic
These look fantastic! I like the slightly retro styling, in contrast to the detailed and dynamic, but generic-feeling, models in Core Space and Infinity. Way more "your dudes" potential here. Excited to kitbash them :D
