Spellcaster: The Frostgrave Magazine

Coming next Friday, June 30

For anyone who can’t get enough Frostgrave, I’ve got an exciting announcement. Next Friday, June 30, I will be releasing the first issue of Spellcaster: The Frostgrave Magazine

This is a PDF-only magazine, mostly written and assembled by myself. While I have the blessing of Osprey Games, this is a purely independent project. It’s a chance for me to write rules and other game material that either don’t really fit the game world or just don’t mesh well with any of the major releases. It does also mean the internal layout is done by myself, so don't expect anything amazing there!

So what is in this inaugural issue?

* Rules for using black powder firearms
* Rules for horses in the Frozen City
* Rules for Knightly Orders which add variety to your knights and templars
* Alone in the Crypt – a solo Frostgrave scenario in which you play a captain with a quiver-full of magic arrows trying to escape a crypt full of undead
* The Catacombs of the Evrenbright – a three scenario mini-campaign originally created for Adepticon 2017

Also, as you can see, I’ve managed to convince Frostgrave veteran, Dmitry Burmak to help out with cover art!

This issue of Spellcaster will consist of 18 pages, have a cover price of $5, and will initially be available through RPG Now and Wargames Vault, with Amazon hopefully following soon as well. If none of these work for you, feel free to contact me, and I’m sure we can work something out.

HT Publishers will also be producing a Spanish edition of the magazine which will be available on the same day.

  3. Not looking for additional writers at the moment. I'm afraid I barely have time to keep up with my own writing.

  4. Have you thought of Patreon? Can't find a way to buy a subscription on those sites is all.

  11. Black Powder firearms!? Now that's interesting news!

I was SUPER stoked about Ghost Archipelago when you first announced it - because I have PILES of pirate figures (and a few half-built ships just needing and excuse like Ghost Archipelago to get finished)... and then I realized 90+% of my pirates are armed with some sort of firearm - mostly pistols.... and the excitement faded just a little as I worried that the setting would be in the same technological period as Frostgrave - i.e. medieval - and there likely wouldn't be firearms (Oh, I was still planning to buy it and play it, but I wasn't AS super stoked). I know, some people have used firearms and basically treated them as crossbows... but I feel like they're out of place when everyone else is using medieval miniatures.

Will there be rules for firearms in Ghost Archipelago itself?

    1. The rules presented in Spellcaster cover both Frostgrave and Ghost Archipelago, there is only one, minor, difference between the two.

  13. Wow! This is very cool news.

I'm interested to see your take on black power weapons. I've been a bit anti them entering the game so far, but it will good to see how you interpret them.

Horses are a welcome addition. Knightly Orders sounds like a great little extra. And who wouldn't want more scernarios and campaign material.

If this is a way for you to monetise all those little rules ideas you come up with, I think it's very smart. (But then, that's what I've come to expect from you 😉).

  18. I eagerly await an opportunity to support this. I think what you are doing here is so clever!

I think additional solo rules content will be a major hit for you. I love Dark Alchemy so much!

  19. Cool but 5 USD for 18 pages is a bit steep. On the other hand its Frostgrave specific, so will need to see...

    1. I don't think cheaper would be worth his time, he's busy with other things I'm sure. It's not the page count you are paying for, but quality content.

  20. Everyone will have to decide for themselves is what I'm offering is worth the price. It certainly isn't going to have the design or graphic quality of the Osprey Publications. On the other hand, word-count wise, it is about half of the length of one of the Osprey supplements for half the price.

  21. Sounds like a cool little project. I'm always up for more Frostgrave.

  22. Hello Joe, this is an instand buy for me. I was wondering of the 3 scenario campagne is designed for 2 players or are those scenario's multiplayer games.

I'm planning a frostgrave weekend in two weeks and it would save me a lot of time :D

Cheers and keep up the good work.

    1. Thanks for the support, Daan. The scenarios were originally designed with two-players in mind - that said, they should work for multiple players will very minimal modification.

  23. One of my favorite little RPG publishers uses Patreon to great success. Because of all his Patreon subscribers, he is able to offer his writers one of the best industry rates. Check him out at Raging Swan Press. Just a suggestion to go this route.

Personally, I'd rather see the articles in other wargaming magazines, especially WSS and WI, as they have carried your articles in the past. I've picked up their magazines for the Frostgrave articles in the past and enjoyed the other articles so much I plan on subscribing to them!

  24. Well, you haven't seen the end of Frostgrave in the wargaming magazines either. There is new a Ghost Archipelagao scenario appearing in this month's Wargames Illustrated!
